Choosing a Moving Company:
- Make sure the moving company is reputable by verifying their US DOT license or TX DOT license numbers at the Department of Transportation websites:

- Check with the Better Business Bureau to verify membership. Either call local or check online.
- Talk to your moving company. If you know your moving somewhere that has stairs, no elevators, small doorways, or any other factors that might make the move more difficult, tell your movers what to expect. This will help them give you a more precise estimate.
- Also inform the moving company of any changes in your move. Communication is the key to a smooth move.
Before You Move:
- Clean out unwanted stuff by having a garage sale.
- Arrange to have gas, water, electric, telephone, etc to be turned off on your move out date. Also arrange the connection of these services at your new address a couple of days before the move.
- Start preparing you mailing list for people who need a change of address. Have your mail forwarded to you new address in a timely manner.
- Have personal documentation (birth/marriage certificates, driver's license, passports, social security cards) for you and other family members together so these things don't get packed on the moving truck.
- Have all you finances in order before your move. Notify banks, saving accounts, credit card companies, and rental agencies about the move.
- Do you need a storage building because your new home is not ready? If so, arrange this in advance.
- Make proper provisions for pets. You may want to have a pet sitter or send your pet to a kennel on moving day. Your pets may be in the way of the movers when moving large furniture or may get out if a door is left open.
- Make travel arrangements for you and your family on moving day.
- Return library books and movie rentals.
- Make sure your furniture will fit through the doorways of your new home. Take measurements of your furniture and doorways before moving day.
- Be as organized as possible on moving day to help make your move more efficient and cost-effective for you. Write down an inventory when you pack of what the moving company will move and what you will carry with you.
